Learning about and managing the Guard feature
What is the Guard feature for the Bell Wi-Fi app?
Guard is AI-driven security for devices on your Whole Home Wi-Fi network. Powered by cloud-based real-time protection algorithms and intelligence based on machine learning, Guard neutralizes threats throughout the home. Security features inherently require information to protect your devices, and these features are designed to respect you and your data privacy. You’re in full control of enabling, disabling and customizing these features.
Guard features monitor your device network for metadata like DNS, IP address and packet sizes.
Guard features include:
Online protection helps block your devices from accessing websites known to contain malware, botnets, spyware, spam, phishing, keyloggers, monitoring, proxy avoidance and other harmful attacks. It is possible for apps to be blocked along with websites. n most cases, you’ll see a “page cannot be displayed” timeout message.
Advanced IoT protection: monitors and automatically quarantines smart devices from the local network if unusual behaviour is detected.
Remote access protection automatically blocks incoming connections into home devices until you authorize them.
Note: When enabled, the Guard feature is only active when devices are connected to the primary Bell Wi-Fi.
Guard is disabled by default for your Bell network. To turn on Guard features (requires Home Hub 4000. Giga Hub or Giga Hub 2.0):
- Log in to the Bell Wi-Fi app.
- Touch the Menu & Settings tab at the end.
- Touch Guard.
- Touch the toggle to enable it.
Guard can also be customized at a person level.
- Touch the People icon at the bottom of the home screen.
- Touch the Plus sign to add a user.
- Add a picture and name, then touch Done.
- Touch Next at the top right corner.
- Select the desired Guard access level (Kid, Teen, Adult, No limits).
- You can either use the default settings of each Guard access level, or customize the profile by selecting each specific Guard event (e.g., advanced IoT protection) and enabling or disabling them.
How to use the online protection Guard feature of the Bell Wi-Fi app
Online protection helps safeguard your connected devices from malware sites, botnets, spyware, spam, phishing, keyloggers, monitoring, proxy avoidance, anonymizers and other harmful attacks.
If you try to visit content restricted by this security feature, you will be met with the message “Internet access frozen”.
By default, this feature is turned on when Guard is enabled. It is customizable by device or by person. When enabled for a person, online protection is automatically turned on for all devices assigned to this person.
You can manage online protection at the network level in the Guard menu from the Menu & Settings tab.
How to use the advanced IoT Protection feature of Guard with the Bell Wi-Fi app
Advanced IoT protection helps safeguard your devices from sources of attacks that are not in any threat intelligence databases. It detects unusual patterns in device activity which may indicate that a device is infected. If a device attempts unusual behaviour, the connection is blocked and the device is quarantined from the rest of the local network.
A quarantine prevents the spread of infection to the network and other devices. You can choose to unquarantine a device for an hour, indefinitely, etc.
You can manage advanced IoT protection at the network level in the Guard menu from the Menu & Settings tab.
How to use the content access Guard feature of the Bell Wi-Fi app
The content access feature of Guard restricts content at a device or person level. Content filters are divided into four categories:
- No restrictions: No content is blocked.
- Adult: Some sensitive content for adults 18 and over will be blocked., like abused drugs including Marijuana, illegal actions like hacking, weapons, and explicit or sexual content.
- Teen: Sensitive content not appropriate for teens 13 to 17 will be blocked. This includes the Adult Profile content listed above plus alcohol, tobacco, gambling, dating and self-harm.
-
Kid: Sensitive content not appropriate for kids 12 and under will be blocked. This includes the Teen Profile content above, plus social media/networking, messaging, chat rooms, political, shopping and financial sites.
Content filtered at a person level will apply to all devices for that person. Content filters will not work if the privacy mode is turned on, or if the device is using a random MAC address.
How the Guard feature of the Bell Wi-Fi app stores your browsing history
For Guard features to work properly, it needs to collect DNS request information (not URLs) and send it to the cloud. This is used to identify web-based sources that have potential security risks. The only information that is stored is the DNS requests that are blocked by Guard-enabled rules. These requests are not accessible to the customer using our Bell Wi-Fi app, and is not viewable by Bell (or its partners) personnel.
If you prefer not to send DNS requests to be used by Guard, you can enable the privacy mode in the Bell Wi-Fi app. The privacy mode disables all Guard features. You may also delete all previously recorded security events in the app.
Bell does not store or collect visited websites in the app and is compliant with national consumer privacy regulations. At no time will Bell provide, or have any access to, information pertaining to visited websites at a person profile or device level using Guard.
How to enable Privacy Mode using the Guard feature of the Bell Wi-Fi app
The privacy mode lets you limit the data being sent to the cloud and is disabled by default.
To enable the privacy mode:
- Touch Menu & Settings.
- Touch Guard.
- Touch the toggle to enable the feature.
This feature is configured by location.
When the privacy mode is turned on, all Guard features (online protection, advanced IoT protection, adblocking and content access) are disabled. Past blocked events will be preserved and visible unless you choose to Delete Guard Events. All previously quarantined devices will be unquarantined. Advanced device typing information may also be inaccurate as DNS sampling and user agents will not be collected at any time.
How to use the Guard feature on the Bell Wi-Fi app with a VPN
Guard is generally not compatible with VPN services. That’s because a VPN encapsulates device traffic, meaning the device can no longer be protected by Guard. Protections and blocked content can be circumvented with VPN usage and may trigger additional Guard event counts.
How to manage Guard events on the Bell Wi-Fi app
You can modify Guard events by approving or blocking an IP address or website.
To modify a Guard event:
- Touch Guard Events.
- Touch + button (top right corner).
-
Touch the desired action:
- Touch Approve/Block website and enter the full URL of the website to modify.
- Touch Approve/Block IP addresses and enter the IP address to modify.
- Confirm what device or person the new Guard event rule will be applied against.
- Touch Add.
Learn about the Bell Wi-Fi app – FAQ
What profile works best for kids?
The kids profile is the most restrictive by design. Because mainly caters to kids, it is restricted in several ways. This may come in the form of website blocks and access limitation for some apps. A “page cannot be displayed” timeout message may appear in your browser, or some apps will become non-functional. If you find that some applications or websites are being blocked, we recommend you allow websites or IP addresses through the app. See Managing Guard events. Additionally, you can also select a less restrictive profile setting that allows this particular website or application to function normally. See what is blocked per user profile.
Can I track all the websites my family visits?
Due to privacy laws, there is no ability to track visited websites within the app. There is the ability, however, to block certain websites from being visited from a person and device level. See Managing Guard events for more details.
Why do I see a “page cannot be displayed” message?
This is a common screen timeout screen that would be experienced with blocked content. On the kids profile (our most restrictive), a “page cannot be displayed” error would be experienced in a broad number of content categories. See Content access for more details
Why don’t I see the Guard tile in my Bell Wi-Fi app?
While the Wi-Fi app is compatible with a broad number of Bell modems, Guard is unavailable on older equipment due to its advanced features. Guard is only compatible with the following Bell modems.
- Giga Hub 2.0
- Giga Hub
- Home Hub 4000
Additionally, the application must be updated, and you must enable Guard for it to function.
Do I have to do anything to benefit from some of the protections of Guard?
Guard must be enabled to function. But, once enabled, it’s completely autonomous and will help protect your home without your interaction thanks to the power of AI.
